Weird????

Saw this link on a blog. What do you think of them? Weird or what?

I find them a bit spooky but I’m not sure I can explain why I feel like that.

I know it is something that I will have to try working on for future assignments towards my degree. I need to be able to write about my feelings to works of art or textiles instead of just saying I like or dislike something.

New Year …….. new start

Well here we are in 2012 hope everyone has a Happy and creative year.

After the past 2 years of my own Annus Horribilis I’m hoping that now I have got my health problems sorted I can make a fresh start on my journey to a Degree in Textiles.

I gave up making resolutions years ago because even with the best of intentions they where never kept for more than a few weeks but I plan to finish Textiles 1: Exploring Ideas so I can send it for Assessment in July and complete Understanding Art 1: Western Art this year so that I will have completed my 3 level 1 modules.

I spent a few days at my brothers in York after Christmas and went to an exhibition at York Art Gallery of William Etty. I like to take my time at exhibitions ……. but my brother and nephew aren’t interested in Art so unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to look at the paintings properly.

I know one of the subjects to study in Western Art is a Gothic church so when I go to York Minster I will go by myself and take my time.

I’ve had to put studying on hold for a while. I had a Hysterectomy on 27th October, I’m slowly recovering but I can’t do anything strenuous like housework or lifting anything heavy for at least 8 weeks after so I’ve packed a box with things I can be doing while I’m recovering – sketchbook work, light sewing. I’ve not done much since I came home from hospital just sleeping a lot and watching Tv but I’m starting to feel more myself so hopefully I’ll be able to do a bit of work soon.

Tyvek

I’ve been doing some samples with Tyvek for ‘Reveal and Conceal’. I can’t tell you how many pieces I have wasted in the past trying to get it right. I think I’ve got it sussed now but this videoshows just how to do it.

Creative Sketchbooks

I feel I haven’t been doing enough work in my sketchbook so when I saw this online course with Design Matters I decided to enrol on it.

I’m half way through Module 1. Linda and Laura have put a lot of time and effort into this course so obviously they don’t won’t to much detail to be shared online but here’s a taster of what I’ve been doing so far.

Well that was a failure. I followed the instructions on this video by Clare Benn of Committed to Cloth.

The colour came out of the finished sample – very pale and insipid, probably because I use compatable inks in my printer.

UPDATE 18th October – I need a new scanner so treated myself to an all-in-one Printer 1/2 price from Argos. I’ll have another got at this technique once I’ve got it set up as it comes with good inks.

I started doing a few samples for Chapter 3 Reveal and Conceal. I coloured an A4 piece of Tyvek and 2 weights of Lutrador with fabric paints. I’ve not used Lutrador before so should be interesting but I have tried Tyvek before with various outcomes, some good, some bad so hopefully I’ll get it right this time.

I stitched the painted Tyvek to various pieces of organza then ironed it. Not bad but I think it looks better when held up to the light.

I zapped the Lutrador with a heat gun. I’m not sure if I like some of these new materials. I’ll get to experiment with them more in the new level 2 module Textiles 2: Contemporary Practice

I have to knuckle down and get on with more work or I’m going to get way behind.

My order came from Great Art. They had a sale on plus free p+p so I got a few different size sketch books they’ll keep me going for quite a while. There was an extra 10% off the orders so I got 3 brayers for printing , a set of Pebeo brilliant watercolour and replace the gouache that I was running out of.
